The women from the West Coast got the better of their hosts on Saturday night, as Canaries beat Vieux Fort South in the final of the Saint Lucia Football Association Senior Women’s Tournament, under the theme Let Them Play. Canaries repeated as champions, beating the Vieux Fortians 2-1 at Phillip Marcellin Grounds.
In the league phase of the competition, these two teams had played to a 1-1 draw. Going into the final, defending champions Canaries had been spearheaded by talismanic goal-scorer Cassandra Shepherd, whilst Vieux Fort South owed much to Ernasha Nanton.
In the event, Shepherd did not add to her league-leading 11 goals. Rather, Kylah Solomon netted in the 58th minute to give the visitors a lead. Nanton equalised eight minutes later, but Solomon was on the spot once again to score the winner with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Solomon was named Most Valuable Player of the final, and the Canaries claimed the first prize of $ 8,000. Vieux Fort South, third last year, took home $5,000.
In the third-place playoff, Central Castries and Desruisseaux could not be separated after regulation time. Desruisseaux took the fixture 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The latter stages of the competition would have missed some exciting players, such as Kirsheema Ince (Vieux Fort South) and Arnicka Louis (Central Castries), who are currently at school in the US.
