Saint Lucia victorious at ECGA golf

For the second time in three years, Saint Lucia are Eastern Caribbean Golf Association (ECGA) champions, winning the gross title on Sunday, October 5th, in St Kitts and Nevis. Of special note were strong performances from Yadhu Urs and the women golfers, led by Lisa Garner.

Urs, a student athlete at Ohio Dominican University, was incredible on the second day of competition at the Royal St Kitts Golf Course in Frigate Bay. He had hit 72 in the first round to top the men’s flight. But he was just one stroke ahead of second place, and just four strokes separated the top five.

On day two though, Urs scored a brilliant three-under 69, six strokes clear of the player in second place. He ended with a one-under 141 over two days, winning the men’s flight by eight strokes. Nicholas Beaubrun and Romanus Inglis tied for ninth on 160.

Garner had a consistent outing to win the women’s gross by one stroke. She hit 168 (83, 85) whilst Antigua and Barbuda’s Toni Honnes went 169 (87, 82). Sealing the women’s team competition, however, were Catherine Spooner and Britney Mangal, third and fourth. Spooner stroked 171 (88, 83) and Mangal 176 (89, 87). Mangal is a product of the Saint Lucia Golf Association’s junior programme.

Although the seniors category was decided between the hosts and Antigua & Barbuda, Tim Mangal and Eugene Edwin kept Saint in touch. Fourth outright after the opening day, Mangal tied for fifth with 156 (74, 82).  Edwin was eighth with 160 (80, 80) and Andre Dhanpaul tied for 10th with 165 (83, 82).

Among the super seniors, McHale Andrew tied for seventh on 168 (84, 84). Victor Charles finished on 170 (83, 87).

The nine-team competition included Anguilla, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Croix, and Sint Maarten.
