Honoured as part of University of North Texas’ Senior Night on February 28, Megan Nestor delivered a fitting performance, finishing with 14 points and 22 rebounds. But despite the Saint Lucian forward’s dominance, the Mean Green slipped 66–63 to South Florida.
Too many giveaways and missed chances at the line proved costly, and after leading by one entering the fourth, UNT failed to score in the last 2:01, ending a month‑long home winning streak.
“We didn’t get out to the best start that we wanted, but I thought in the third quarter we turned things around and settled into the game,” head coach Jason Burton said.
“The three biggest things for us: gave up way too many offensive rebounds, turned the ball over too much, two things we had gotten better at over the last six or seven games, really, and then the free throw line.”
Nestor’s double-double was her 18th of the season, tied for third-most in single-season school history. She leads the American Conference in that statistic and is in the top 10 nationally. She also leads the nation in rebounding, with 416 at 14.3 per game.
Saturday marked her sixth time grabbing at least 20 rebounds, and she is now just three shy of breaking the American Conference record set by Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeau in 2023.
Nestor added two assists and two steals in 37 minutes, and her work on the offensive boards got the Mean Green going early. She missed just two of her eight shots, though she was only 2-6 from the free throw line.
The conference tournament gets underway on March 10. Nestor said the loss on Senior Day did little to shake her focus on winning a championship.
“[It’s] the last home game, but we still got a few more games than that,” asserted the Caribbean star. “We’re worried about winning and getting to the conference tournament and winning that, so it wasn’t a really emotional day for me because the job is still not done.”
