Soufriere soar to the top of Southern football

Vieux Fort South could not capitalise on home advantage on Friday, April 24, losing to Soufriere at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in the final of the Saint Lucia Football Association Southern Zone Under-20 Men’s District Tournament.

Soufriere’s Eymani Butcher, the tournament’s leading goal scorer, was effectively contained as both teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation.

Kailon Flavius gave Soufriere the lead just before halftime. Keivin Sylvester equalised for Vieux Fort South in the 89th minute, securing the draw.

Soufriere won the penalty shootout 5-4 to claim the Southern championship, avenging their earlier loss to Vieux Fort South in the preliminaries.

Vieux Fort South reached the final by defeating Choiseul 1-0, after losing 2-1 to them in the prelims. They also beat Vieux Fort North 6-0 in the semifinal.

Vieux Fort North secured third place by defeating Choiseul 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, matching their group stage result.

Vieux Fort North scored through Keshawn Charles in the 33rd minute and benefited from an own goal by Shakari Faucher in the 54th. Choiseul responded with goals from Christopher Montoute in the 60th minute and Devin Phillip in the 61st.

The Southern Zone tournament featured 49 goals, with Butcher contributing 11.
