Roseau Valley take top spot in Western football

Roseau Valley won the Saint Lucia Football Association Western Zone Under-20 Men’s District Tournament, defeating Canaries 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Marigot Playing Field on Saturday, May 9. With this win, Roseau join Gros Islet, Dennery, and Soufriere as zonal youth champions.

Canaries opened the scoring against the top defensive unit in the competition, and Roseau Valley, the most prolific team in the tournament, scored the equaliser late. With just two minutes left in regulation, Canaries conceded, and at the final whistle, it went to spot kicks.

Roseau scored all their penalties, and their goalkeeper made a key save on Canaries’ last attempt. South Castries took third place, while Anse La Raye finished fourth.

Armani Lesmond from South Castries led all scorers with four goals. Zyhym Jn Charles, who scored twice for Canaries in their semifinal win over South Castries, and his teammate Jaden Longville each finished with three goals.

The top district teams will continue training as they prepare for the Blackheart Football Tournament, which kicks off this weekend in Vieux Fort. This year, the interdistrict knockout competition will include Under-20 teams for the first time.
