The World Athletics Under-20 Championships Oregon 26 began Wednesday morning at Hayward Field in Eugene. Hundreds of young athletes from around the world are competing for top spots in their age groups. One of them is Saint Lucia’s Jady Emmanuel.
Emmanuel, who won two CARIFTA Under-17 titles in 2025 and the 2026 ANOCES/OECS senior 100m gold, ran the second-fastest time in the women’s 100m preliminaries. She also broke her own national Under-18 record.
Emmanuel, from the Laborie community of Morne Paul, pulled away from the field to win in 11.28 seconds, a personal best that supplants her previous PB of 11.39 from winning in St Kitts & Nevis last month. The wind was 1.9 metres per second.
The 17-year-old, who will soon attend the University of Texas, won Heat 2. Guyana’s Athaleyha Hinckson finished second in 11.31, and Australia’s Maya Taber was third in 11.39. Emmanuel also finished ahead of event favourites such as Jamaica’s Sahnoya Douglas and the Maxwell twins from the US.
Theianna-Lee Terrelonge of Jamaica ran 11.21 to win Heat 4, which was the fastest time in the first round. The semifinals are set for 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, when Emmanuel will try to reach her first global final.
