After an eventful final preliminary race on Wednesday, Saint Lucia’s Luc Chevrier has advanced to the gold medal round of the ILCA 7 men’s Laser Radial sailing event at the Central American & Caribbean Games. The 27-year-old Olympian will compete in two races on Friday.
Chevrier enters the final fleet at Punta Salinas in second place. Of the 18 sailors who started the event last weekend, only the top five will compete for medals, and previous standings will no longer count. He told St Lucia Times that he has high hopes.
In Race 9, Chevrier earned his fifth win, adding to his earlier second, third, and two fourth-place finishes, which kept him atop the leaderboard. Although he faced trouble in the final race, he is still confident about improving on the bronze medal he won in 2023.
In Race 10, Chevrier finished ninth, which moved him to second place overall behind Puerto Rico’s Pedro Fernandez Gamboa, who claimed his second win of the series. Chevrier’s slower pace was caused by a clear plastic bag stuck under his hull, a problem he only found after the race.
Chevrier finished the preliminaries with 18 net points, just behind Gamboa’s 16, slightly ahead of Sebastian Kempe’s 19, and far ahead of Joshua Higgins, who had 40 points. The Saint Lucian champion has good reason to feel confident as he heads into the two-race final.
If conditions are good and he performs well on Friday, Chevrier is ready to challenge for the gold medal.
