Police unable to share details of Lester Jean charge

The investigation into last month’s deadly Anse Cochon boat collision is nearing completion, but police say they cannot publicly discuss the circumstances surrounding separate charges brought against one of the survivors, Lester Jean.

Four people died and 14 others were injured after the July 18 collision between the motor vessels Ocean Angel and Mango Tours. The crash happened just before midnight near Anse Cochon.

Providing an update at Wednesday’s police press conference, Assistant Superintendent Reece Auguste, who is in charge of the Police Marine Unit, said investigators have made significant progress in gathering statements related to the collision.

“This investigation in that matter is well underway. I can tell you that it is about 90% complete in terms of statements being obtained,” Auguste said.

The next step could see the findings placed before the Director of Public Prosecutions for guidance in that matter.

But the collision has since become connected with another case, this time involving Jean, who survived the tragedy.

According to information previously reported, Jean allegedly swam to a nearby yacht following the collision. He was subsequently charged with trespassing and grievous harm in connection with an alleged encounter involving a foreign national.

The charges have prompted concern and outrage among some members of the Soufrière community, who have questioned how a man they believe was seeking help after surviving a deadly collision ended up facing criminal charges.

Auguste acknowledged the connection between the two matters during Wednesday’s briefing.

“There was also an unfortunate incident that tied up with that same accident where a foreign national was assaulted,” he said. “I can report that one person has since been charged in that assault.”

Given the questions surrounding Jean’s case, St. Lucia Times sought clarification from police on the circumstances that led to the charges, including what investigators allege occurred after he reached the other vessel.

Police, however, said they could not provide those specifics because Jean’s case is now before the courts and commenting on the evidence could prejudice the proceedings.

That leaves the circumstances behind the charges largely unexplained publicly, even as the broader investigation into the collision that preceded them nears completion.
