Saint Lucia has welcomed another centenarian, with Agnes Edgard of Paix-Bouche, Babonneau, celebrating her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and community members.
Edgard, affectionately known as “Grinita”, “Ma Ta” and “Ma Bill”, marked the milestone on Sunday, August 16.
Staff of the Older Persons Unit within the Department of Equity, Social Justice, Gender and Older Persons joined the celebrations, presenting Edgard with a bouquet and commemorative plaque.
A respected member of the Paix-Bouche community, Edgard’s life has been shaped by hard work, resilience, faith and service.
She attended Babonneau School only up to Standard One, leaving school because of family responsibilities. Despite this, she placed a strong emphasis on education and honesty when raising her own children.
Edgard made farming her main livelihood and also baked bread and cakes and made homemade ice cream to supplement her income.
She married Paul Edgard in 1958 and raised five children. Her family has since grown to include grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Her faith has also played an important role throughout her life. She served through church and community organisations and became known as someone her neighbours could rely on for help.
At 100, Edgard is being celebrated for a life marked by perseverance, generosity and devotion to her family and community.
The Older Persons Unit congratulated Edgard and her family on the milestone.
