Saint Lucian sailor Luc Chevrier continues to etch his name in the record books, achieving a race win on Wednesday at the 2026 ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship. Chevrier won Race 5 of the Red Fleet at Dún Laoghaire in Dublin, Ireland.
The first individual race win by a Saint Lucian at this level follows Chevrier’s silver medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo earlier this month, another first for Saint Lucia in this sport.
A two-time Olympian, who represented the nation in Tokyo and France, the 27-year-old Chevrier completed his five-race qualifying series in Ireland with 67 net points.
“It’s super nice to be winning at least a race in the World Championships,” said Chevrier. “I finally had a good start. That played a big part in it.
“Basically, I made the difference on the downwind. In that first downwind, I managed to separate from my competitors and put that distance between me and second place. Then I just kept controlling the race on the second upwind, not taking too much risk, just following the fleet and covering as I know how to.”
Already qualified for the 2027 Pan Am Games, Chevrier made the elite Gold Fleet in Dublin, finishing 55th out of 141 sailors. The top Caribbean competitor, he opened the regatta with a tough 32nd-place finish in Race 1.
His subsequent fleet positioning stabilised significantly, as he recorded finishes of 20, 25, and 21. His execution in Race 5, under lighter winds of 7-9 knots, yielded a 16.75 race average across his counting scores.
“It’s always a pleasure to represent my country. We’re a small country, but we have a lot of rising athletes in sailing and athletics. It’s a good thing to be from a small country, but it’s also really nice to put us on the map, and I’m super proud of this first place, for sure,” said Luc.
The elimination final series begins on Thursday, with two high-intensity races on Dublin Bay. The multi-race daily blocks will carry forward through Friday and Saturday, with the final championship race day on Sunday.
