The Saint Lucia Cycling Association has had a busy summer, focusing on youth development, while the nation’s top rider undergoes high-level training ahead of next month’s World Championships.
Denver Alphonse Jr, the reigning national champion from La Caye, Dennery, is currently based at the UCI Continental Development Satellite Centre in Bromont, Canada, for a six-week training stint. The 19-year-old is preparing for the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal from September 20 to 27.
Alphonse swept the national road race and individual time trial titles in June, adding to his 2025 national road title. Earlier this year, riding for ASC Karaïbes Culture Sports (KCS), he earned an Under-23 podium spot at the Grand Prix Mill€co.Shop in Martinique and represented Saint Lucia at the Pan American Championships in Colombia.
Alphonse Jr also rode at the 2025 World Championships in Rwanda. He became the first Saint Lucian rider to have his national jersey displayed at the KOERS Museum of Cycling in Belgium.
In Bromont, Alphonse is training alongside French cyclist Benjamin Payen. They train and compete in Martinique with KCS under the guidance of coach Alex Noreskal.
Back home, the association concluded its one-week youth cycling summer camp in Vieux Fort, with 20 kids from Plain View Combined School, Vieux Fort Primary, and Augier Combined learning under coach Leo Serieux.
The young riders received instruction in cycling theory, nutrition, physiology, road safety and basic race preparation. Danny Butcher, MP for Vieux Fort South, presented certificates to the participants.
