Francis “Baba” Lastic has been relieved of his duties as interim head coach of Saint Lucia’s senior men’s national football team, just days before the Concacaf Nations League kicks off.
Multiple sources confirmed over the weekend that the longtime assistant coach and former international defender was asked to step down before Friday’s opener against Barbados at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
He continued leading training until last week. The SLFA is expected to announce his replacement at a press conference in La Clery on Tuesday.
The previous head coach, Stern John, left the position earlier this year. The new coach, whose name has not been announced, arrived on the island last Friday and immediately started working with the national team.
Two weeks ago, sources said the SLFA had narrowed down its list of applicants and was close to making a final choice. Many in the football community were surprised by how quickly things moved, especially since the SLFA had just named Miran Louis as its new technical director.
Lastic’s sudden removal as interim head coach has not disrupted training or the selection of the team for upcoming home games. Barbados and Guadeloupe named their squads last week, while Saint Lucia is expected to announce its team at Tuesday’s press conference.
Goalkeeper Vino Barclett, who now plays for Montego Bay United in the Jamaica Premier League, is among those in contention, along with his club teammates Melvin Doxilly and striker Kegan Caull.
Winger Caniggia Elva should be joining from Calvary FC, as will defender Terell Thomas from Carlisle United.
Top scorers from the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League, Yanic Noel from La Clery and Garvin Reggie from Dennery, are both expected to compete for spots. Gregson President of Vieux Fort South and young attacking midfielder Shaquan Nelson are also in the mix.
