Competitive cricket returns to Gros Islet in October after a one-year break, with a four-team T20 tournament and a new development programme for the district’s young players. The Gros Islet Cricket Association (GICA) held a player draft that brings together grassroots prospects, local club players and senior team members.
“We didn’t have a tournament last year. So this year we restarted our domestic competition,” said GICA Chairman Joseph Hall. “We are trying our best to get all of our local players, our Under-19 players, our grassroots players, involved in the tournament.”
GICA is also including players from outside the district, and working to develop scorers, umpires and other officials. The franchises are led by batsman and wicketkeeper Dominic Auguste, batsman Jard Goodman, allrounder Lee John and former West Indies Under-19 captain Kimani Melius.
Head coach Alton Crafton pointed out that Gros Islet’s Under-19 contingent will simultaneously contest a series of longer-format fixtures in the ongoing Saint Lucia National Cricket Association Super 50, and that the tournament may also feature longer developmental games.
Gros Islet has achieved significant success in recent years, winning the Sandals Under-19 Tournament, the Saint Lucia Premier League and the SLNCA Two-Day Men’s Tournament.
