School basketball tips off with exciting contests

The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports (MYDS) 2026 School Sports season got underway on Tuesday with four games in the Under-19 basketball tournament. St Mary’s College, Soufriere Comprehensive, Leon Hess Comprehensive, and Beanefield Comprehensive got off to winning starts at the Beausejour Gymnasium.

SMC, finalists last year, held off third-place finishers Castries Comprehensive Secondary School (CCSS) 50-43, in the day’s closest contest. SMC led 8-5 after the opening quarter, and took control with a 20-10 second period to build a 13-point halftime lead.

CCSS fought back by outscoring SMC in both the third (14-12) and fourth (14-10) periods, getting within three points in the final frame, but SMC held on.

Denzel Rollins paced SMC with 10 assists and eight rebounds, while Daelan Magloire and Jabari Archibald each contributed 10 points. Archibald also pulled down 10 rebounds. David Chandler led CCSS with 17 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while Jeannah Louis scored 14 points.

LHCSS defeated Entrepot Secondary 43-28 in the east Castries derby. Hess took an early 6-4 lead, but ESS edged the second period 14-13. Leon Hess pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Entrepot 16-4. Azariah Moffatt led Hess with 17 points and two assists. Mikhail Felix scored 12 points and took five rebounds. Jaiden Gregg paced Entrepot with 14 points and nine rebounds.

SCSS defeated Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School 31-17. The Sulphur City boys established an 8-1 lead after the first 15 minutes, and led 15-3 at the half. A 10-4 third quarter kept Soufriere in control before VFCSS took the fourth 10-6.

Curdin Jones led Soufriere with 18 points, 20 rebounds, and one block. Aloysious William added five points and four assists. Chris Cyrilion led Vieux Fort with 12 points, six rebounds, and one block, while Doniv Jn Baptiste contributed three assists.

Beanefield secured a 9-3 win over Choiseul Secondary. BCSS led 4-3 at the interval, and held Choiseul scoreless throughout the entire second half, adding four points in the third and one in the fourth. Steven Haale led Beanfield with five points, while Liam Edward hauled down eight rebounds. Rennel Joseph scored two points for Choiseul, and Christiano Nestor secured six rebounds.

Competition continues on Thursday, as champions Sir Arthur Lewis Community College take on LHCSS, and ESS plays Beanefield.
