The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has confirmed that an operation in the town of Vieux Fort on Monday resulted in the recovery of a quantity of illegal drugs and the arrest of a Vige, Micoud resident.
When officers from the Gangs, Narcotics, and Firearms Unit South and the Customs and Excise Department conducted a joint operation and investigation at the Vieux Fort Wharf, they intercepted a quantity of illegal drugs concealed in juice cans. The cans were in a barrel shipped from Canada.
The illegal substance comprised 697g of cannabis and 990g of cannabis resin.
One individual has been arrested in connection with the discovery.
The person was listed as the receiver of the barrel. His premises were subsequently searched and illegal substances were recovered. He is currently awaiting a bail hearing.
His name was not disclosed.
Inspector Shervon Matthew who heads the Gang, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, had expressed that despite recent successes, law enforcement faced challenges detecting contraband.
He said trafficking of illegal firearms and narcotics was among the most serious threats to national security.
