A Shaquille Degazon double gave La Clery a winning start on the opening day of the Caribbean Football Union’s Club Shield competition. They beat Roaring Lions 2-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad & Tobago, to advance from the Round of 32.
The two-time Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League champions began their campaign on Thursday against Anguilla’s top team and showed their quality early. La Clery created several chances. Degazon scored first from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after Dante Fitz was fouled.
Nine minutes later, he scored again from open play, finishing a short cross from Baggio Edward at close range. La Clery controlled the rest of the match but could not increase their lead. They conceded a goal in the 90th minute but still won 2-1.
Saint Lucia’s champions will next face Suriname’s SV Robinhood, who advanced directly to the Round of 16. The match is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at Hasely Crawford Stadium. SV Robinhood has played Saint Lucian teams before, beating B1 FC 5-0 in the 2023 group stage on their way to the title.
The CFU Club Shield is a qualifier for this year’s Concacaf Caribbean Cup. The winner and runner-up will move on to the Confederation’s 10-club tournament, bringing them closer to the Concacaf Champions Cup. So far, no team from Saint Lucia has reached that stage.
